Let’s begin today’s show with a small IQ question – Can you say exactly when humans first came to know about nuts and their usage? To speak the truth, even I don’t know! However, History reveals probably around 180,000 years ago, during the Pleistocene period not only the then humans, but also animals knew about the different types of nuts like cashew nuts (kaju), apricots (khubani), dates (khajoor), walnuts (akhrot), peanuts (moongphali), etc. This very fact interested me to dig deep into the subject matter and research more. So, today I have planned to reveal much more information about nuts including their advantages, usage, health benefits and precautions.

Relation between travelling (journey) and nuts

<img src="Peanuts.jpg" alt="Peanuts"/>
Peanuts

Nuts have good bonding with travelling or journey. During long distance travel in trains people like to have peanuts or salted nuts as it is lighter to consume and a good amount of time passes away with it at ease while they are involved in the process of peeling and consuming those. Apart from being a lighter diet and time pass there are certain other noteworthy advantages with it as well which are as given below:

  • Easy to carry
  • One doesn’t need utensil to have it
  • Doesn’t get contaminated easily
  • Works as energy boosters and
  • Could be consumed anytime anywhere.

Regular usage of nuts

Nuts are consumed in two ways, salted or unsalted. Besides, these are consumed raw, roasted or by cooking as well. These are used as ingredients in desserts, ice-creams and in other confectionery food items like cakes, biscuits and sweetmeats. Furthermore, these are used in the preparation of coconut butter and groundnut oils as well.

Composition of nuts

The constitutions of different types of nuts act as anti-oxidants to protect and prevent humans from various types of diseases and germs. Some of the important anti-oxidants present in different types of nuts are flavonoids, carotenoids, lutein, cryptoz sulphate , etc.

  • Nuts are the good source of Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, folic acid, etc.
  • Nuts have important antioxidant vitamins like Vitamin E.
  • Contain important minerals like potassium, phosphorus, calcium magnesium, manganese, silinium, iron, zinc, florid, copper, etc.
  • These have fibers that increase immunity.
  • These have oils and proteins like amino acid.

Top health benefits

The following are the important health benefits of nuts:

1. Controls high blood pressure: Adding adequate amount of almond or walnut in a diet for at least three days in a week controls high blood pressure. Besides, consuming unsalted cashew nuts and Chinese almonds also serve the purpose equally well.

2. Controls diabetes: Since nuts are low glycemic fiber rich dry food, these help in controlling the amount of excess glucose in the blood.

3. Prevents cancer: Nuts contain certain acids antioxidants that help in preventing cancer especially stomach cancer.

4. Prevents gall bladder stone: It is believed that consumption of one ounce of nuts in a week prevent the chances of getting affected by gall bladder stone problems by twenty-five percent. However, those already going through a gall bladder history should avoid consuming these.

5. Help in weight management: There is a notion or belief that ‘consumption of nuts result in obese conditions.’ However, the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard School of Public Health proved the belief to be a myth only. The experts opine that those taking Mediterranean diet may add nuts like peanuts, almond, walnut, etc., in their cooking recipes. In fact, this would be more effective in reducing weight in comparison with the traditional method of weight loss regimes.

6. Dental health: Presence of flavoride, calcium and phosphorous strengthen the bones and teeth. Besides, these reduce the problems related with dental caries as well.

7. Prevents anaemia: Presence of minerals like iron and copper help in the manufacture of new red blood cells in the blood. This protects from diseases like anaemia.

Certain precautions should be taken into consideration, which are as given below:

  • Peanuts should be avoided in case of allergy

  • In restaurants, check the menu if the food items contain nuts as ingredients
  • Nuts should be avoided in case of kidney stone history

The dew soaked breeze of the autumn dawn, the sounds of the holy conch shells, the wide spread of the golden paddy fields, the to and fro movement of the Kash Phool (Kans Grass) silently convey the message that the mother goddess is on Her way to come. The mother-nature decorates herself with eternal beauty to give her a warm welcome as well.

Mahalaya is an important an auspicious day in the Hindu culture. In this mobile Internet age, when things are either fading away too soon or losing their space at a rapid pace, certainly it brings a soothing respite when we think that there are certain things constant. Time and age could never alter the relevance or the attraction of the Mahalaya Tithi.

Mahalaya meaning

<img src="Conch Shells.jpg" alt="Conch Shells"/>
Holy Conch Shells

The word is a feminine gender and the adjective of the world Amavasya. Hence, Mahalaya is the adjective of the Amavasya Tithi. However, experts have come out from time to time with different meanings of the word as well. One meaning of the word is shelter or ashraya. Another meaning of the word is festival.

All the rituals and rites related with the occasion are performed in the morning near riverbanks. People bath in the holy waters and offer food and water to their ancestors for their peace. A lot of charity work is also done on this event.

Beginning of Devi Paksha (Durga Puja)

Durga Puja festival is associated with the feelings and sentiments of Bengalis. It wouldn’t be correct to say only Bengalis because today everyone globally associated with the auspicious festival. During the festival, She becomes the household deity of every home. Sometimes, She is a daughter while at other times She is a mother. The event marks the journey of the mother goddess, Durga Maa, to Her father’s home for a few days along with Her siblings Kartik, Ganesh, Lakshmi and Saraswati.

The legendary Story (Mahishasura Mardini)

The battle between the gods and demons took place for one hundred years. In this battle the demon king, Mahishasura defeated Dev Raj Indra comprehensively and became the sole power of the Trilok. Then, the gods were forced to leave the Swargaloka or heaven. One fine day they went to Lord Mahadeva and Vishnu to disclose their misery and to seek help. The humiliating defeat of the gods and the oppression of the demons angered Lord Shiva and Vishnu. They created goddess Durga with their heavenly power to teach the demons a lesson. Besides, they gifted the goddess all the equipment required for the battle with the demon king, Mahishasura.

The loud smile of the goddess and the mild shaking of the quiver of the bow shook the Trilok. The demon king armed with his demon army marched towards the goddess for a battle. The fierce battle lasted for ten days and in the end goddess Durga won the battle. Soon all the gods started the Durga Aradhana with flowers. The news spread everywhere and the whole Trilok began to rejoice and celebrated the goddess victory over the demons.

Spirit of Mahalaya

One important thing that people don’t miss out on this auspicious day is listening the Mahalaya Program on the radio sets or watching it on their television sets. The morning becomes a remarkable one with the enchanting mantras and as the day breaks the mood gets set for the day. It has become a tradition or a culture which no one misses.

Mahalaya date: This year, Mahalaya is on 12th October, 2015 (Monday).

In Bengali, this event is known as “Sindoor Khela.” Everyone prays to the deity for blessing, prosperity, peace and harmony in their life. Finally, before the departure the goddess is offered Paan (betel leaves) and sweets. During this event, before her departure, it is perceived that the eyes of the mother goddess get wet with tears. Finally, she is taken out in huge processions to the riverbank for the holy immersion. While on her way to the riverbank the devotees accompany her with music and beating of the drums. They enchant together innumerable times in loud voices while on their way, “Bolo Durga Mai Ki Jai” and “Asche Bochor Abar Hobe” which means we hail to thee mother goddess; Coming year we will celebrate your arrival together again. The riverbanks get crowded with people to bid a final goodbye to the goddess. Like any other events in Durga Puja, this event gathers huge number of spectators as well. People from the different spheres of life come from far and wide to witness the event.

Festivals play a dominant role in setting our moods in the right order. These indeed make our life more enjoyable and memorable on earth. So today, we have decided to come out with another episode on festivals and celebrations. This time we would take the privilege to discuss the Dussehra festival as celebrated in Kullu in the Himachal Pradesh. This religious tourist spot is located at an elevation of 1230m above the ground. The Bipasha River flows through the region at a rapid pace bisecting the greenery. The snow-capped mountains often peep through the green hills. No doubt, Kullu is a treat to the eyes of the visitors, but equally fascinating is its four hundred years old Dussehra festival. However, the characteristic of its celebration here is somewhat different from the other states of India. How come? Well, read on to find out yourself?

Backdrop

Well, unlike the other states of India here effigies of the demon king Ravana is not put to ashes, rather a Rath Yatra is performed to commemorate the big event. The Rajpariwar of Kullu is very much related with the festival. The celebration gets a kick start at the Vijaya Dashami day from the Raghunath Ji Temple and it continues for seven days. Notably, King Jagat Singh inaugurated the festival here nearly four hundred years ago. From then on it became a tradition here to celebrate the event with great pomp and glory. Jhankis of gods arrive from the various regions of the state days before the actual event.

Celebration

<img src="Cultural Program.jpg" alt="Cultural Program"/>
Cultural Prorgram in the fair
The festivity is organised at the Dhalpur Garden where the gods are kept carefully in long queues. In between, the Raghunath Ji Temple (a temporary structure) is built on the ground. On the Dussehra day, the Jhankis left for the palace or the real Raghunath Ji Temple passing through the roads and streets. Over here, at the Dhalpur Garden Raghunath Ji is carefully placed on a chariot (Rath). As soon as the Dev Puja of the Rajpariwar ends people pull the holy chords of the chariot. After this, Raghunath Ji is carefully removed from the chariot and placed on the temporary temple of the Dhalpur Garden. A grand fair is organised during the event which attracts both the locals and the tourists. Various programs like the folk dances are organised at the Kala Kendra Rangmanch. Besides, several cultures quiz events take place as well. As soon as the gods return to the temple the event ends.

Until last year Bollywood was going through its preset rule, which is Idd was welcomed with the latest release of Bollywood Superstar Salman Khan while Diwali was welcomed with the latest release of another Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Each of these occasions witnessed several blockbusters of the duo superstars. However, this theory is somewhat transforming this time with superstar Salman Khan’s movie already released during Idd and now set for another release this Diwali. Bhaijaan had already a blockbuster release as’ Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ during Idd and now coming out with Rajshri Picture Productions’ Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in Diwali.

<img src="Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.jpg" alt="Prem Ratan Dhan Payo"/>
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo
Superstar Salman Khan has enthralled the audience from the beginning of his career in ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ back in 1989. He was the only hero in Bollywood that time to give a string of hits in a row including films like ‘Patthar Ke Phool, Baaghi, Saajan, etc. However, his releases with Rajshri Production has won the heart of millions for sure. Then, in 1994 Rajshri Pictures came out with (HAHK) Hum Apke Hain Kaun and this film was once again proved to be a blockbuster. Thereafter, in 1999 after a gap of five years came (HSSH) Hum Sath Sath Hain and the movie did a fair business as well. Meanwhile, the character of Prem had so much influence on the then directors that they began to name the character of Salman as Prem in their films. Understandably, until now the superstar has acted in thirteen films with the same character name.

Now, after a gap of sixteen years director Sooraj Barjatya and superstar Salman Khan has paired up together for yet another landmark. Ironically, the superstar is playing the lead role character as Prem while Sonam Kapoor is the lead actress in the movie and playing the role of a dancer. The movie trailer in YouTube gathered a wide record number of views and appreciation for the superstar. It appears by having a look at the YouTube trailer that it is another movie based on the mould of family drama and love. The movie promises to have all the ingredients that make a blockbuster of a movie including romance, hatred, revenge, family bonding, etc.

A keen look at the Bollywood box-office would reveal that romantic movies have the calibre to do great business especially with big star casting. Well-known movie makers of Bollywood like Aditya Chopra, Karan Johan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, etc., all follow the same trend to create their masterpieces.

After so many years, the audience would finally get the opportunity to see Bhaijaan in a new image, perhaps this time a romantic one. The movie is releasing on 12th November, 2015. Ideally, his fans have been habituated to watch Salman in angry looks or in the role of police officers. If you ask me, it doesn’t matter what image he chooses for himself people love him because he is Salman Khan – The Being Human Star.

Dhanteras: Stories, Significance and Celebration

Nowadays, Dhanteras is soaring into popularity even though it comes between Durga Puja and Diwali festivals. The word ‘Dhan’ means wealth and the word ‘Teras’ means Triyadashi or the Aswin Krishna Triyadashi. According to the Hindu Shastra, the devotees pray to goddess Lakshmi for health, wealth and prosperity during this occasion.

In the business community, it is believed that by worshipping goddess Lakshmi during this holy time (purna tithi) all the wishes get fulfilled. The festival is also popular as the Dhanvantari Trayodashi, Choti Diwali and the Yamadeep Dan Utsav. On some parts of the country earthen lamps are lighted and afloat on the rivers. During the last century the word Dhanteras became an inseparable part of our life while in the last few decades it gained more prominence. Whenever we hear the term the image of lighted earthen lamps, jewelries, crowded shops and confectionery items occupy our minds. However, Dhanteras has much more depth and significance than all these. It is celebrated two days before the Diwali festival. First day is perceived as Dhanteras, Yama Diwali (Narak Chaturdashi) or Choti Diwali the next day and Badi Diwali or Deepawali on the third day and Govardhan Puja, finally on the fourth day.

Like any other Hindu festival Dhanteras is related to many stories. One famous story is about king Hima’s son. According to the horoscope of the prince he was destined to die on the fourth day of his marriage by a snake bite. So, on the fourth day of his marriage, his wife heaped all her jewelries at the entry door of their bedroom and lighted several earthen lamps. The entire room was dazzling with lights without a dot of darkness. She sat beside her husband and began to recite stories and hymns to her husband. When Yajraj came disguised as a snake he got mesmerized with the environment inside the bedroom. He (disguised as a snake) silently crept at the top of the heap of jewelries and got involved with hearing the stories and songs. At dawn, he went back without doing anything and thus the prince was saved. Since that day it became a ritual to light earthen lamps in honor of Yama – the god of death.

Another popular story is related to Dhanteras. Once Lord Indra was enjoying an elephant ride. Sage Durvasa passing through the way offered the lord with a garland. Indra kept the garland on the elephant. This act made sage Durvasa angry and he ended up cursing lord Indra. When goddess Lakshmi heard the incident, she at once left the heaven. As Lakshmi left the heaven all the wealth and richness of heaven faded away. The gods began to get poorer and weaker in comparison with the demons. Finally, Lord Brihaspati came to Lord Brahma and Vishnu for a workable solution. The only way out was to have a Samudra Manthan so that the gods could drink nectar (Amrita) and become eternal to drive away the demons from the heaven.

<img src="Goddess Lakshmi.jpg" alt="Lakshmi"/>
Goddess Lakshmi
During Ssamudra Manthan, goddess Lakshmi appeared. Everybody, including the gods and demons tried to please the goddess to have the nectar (Amrita). Then goddess Lakshmi offered a garland to
Lord Vishnu and smiled after looking at Lord Indra. However, the fight between the gods and the demons were still on. Finally, Dhanwantari appeared with nectar (Amrita) and all the gods drank it and became eternal. They won the war against the demon and successfully drove them away from the heaven. This day is known as Trayodashi or the Dhantrayodashi or Dhanteras. Therefore, goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on this day.

Houses and shops are decorated on this day with marigold flowers, rangolis, footstep of the goddess are drawn on the floors. Lakshmi Puja is done during the night followed by bhajans. People buy gold and silver coins and utensils for good luck and prosperity.

Chandannagar is well known for rich display of lighting art-work and it maintains its supremacy in this regard from the early seventies until today.

Spreading over more than 19 square kilometres, Chandannagar is hosting around 139 Jagadhatri Puja Mandaps. After including the Bhadreswar region, the tally soars up to 156 Puja Mandaps in all. These pandals could be divided into two categories on visual basis, namely theme and lighting based. Also, an environment of healthy completion creeps in among the creators and organisers of the various Puja mandaps. Expectedly, this does add an extra tinge of class as far as creativity is concerned. If a puja mandap is planning to pay a tribute to late President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam the other is pouring in its heart and soul to craft out a masterpiece with kitchen wares. While some others are planning to come up with the unique theme of the Kolkata Alipore Zoological Garden, Bird’s Nest, Happiness of Festive Gatherings and so on.

While Jagadhatri Puja is celebrated for a day only in most places, but Chandannagar specialises in celebrating the event for four days. Look at the big stages decorated at various places for distributing ‘Bhog’ or ‘Prasad’ on the auspicious occasion of Navami. Processions of people move out on the roads as they slowly proceed making their way to the Puja mandaps. Thus every inch of the ground is covered with the locals, visitors and tourists pouring in from different directions and moving ahead in one direction amidst high security of police forces, guards and volunteers. Notably, the spirit remains high as the breeze brings in the message of celebration together with the beatings of drums and music.

The Festival dates

This year, Jagadhatri Puja is from 18th of November to 21st of November, 2015. Specifically, people would celebrate Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami respectively on these four days.
