The rate of road accidents in India is more than any other countries of the world. Several factors are responsible for it like the poor road condition, the busy traffic, rash driving, not following the traffic rules properly either by the driver or the pedestrians, etc. While people drive these unfortunate things are there to take place.

 
There is hardly any driver available who has not been once gone through any accidents. Sometimes, an accident occurs because of others mistake while at other times it may happen because of one's carelessness or simply as a mishap. Whatever the reasons for an accident be--- It is important to know what to do in such a situation without panicking.

Things you need to have

You need to keep certain things in your car so that in the emergencies like an accident you may use them. Having these things before hand would save you from several problems during emergencies. Apart from the important documents or papers and license you also need to have the following things in your car, which are as given below:
  • Keep a first aid box: This will come in handy in minor injuries and bruises where no instant help is available.
  • A notebook and a pen: You will need this to note down any important information which you may forget. A pen also comes in handy to note down the number of the offending driver who, usually, may try to hit and run.
  • Important contact numbers of ambulance, police station and your insurance company: These numbers are self-explanatory as you may need these one by one while going through the process.
  • A mobile phone: This is a must have and serves the purpose when you need instant help.

Things to avoid when accidents take place

There are certain things you should avoid doing when accidents take place. These are as given below:
  1. Do not panic: In 70 percent of cases drivers get panic and commit more mistakes after going through accidents. Have faith in yourself and try to manage with the situation properly. Remember, if you get nervous, then you may lose half the battle.
  2. Do not run away: This is the most common mistake that a driver commits. Later, he has to pay a heavy price for it. Rather, be brave and try to tackle the situation. When a driver runs away he has to take all the blame after any mishap.
  3. Do not move out of the car in haste: This is important and do not move out of the car in haste in a busy road. Take your time and move out only after making sure no other vehicle is passing by you.
  4. Do not admit your mistake in public: Admitting mistake in public is the worst thing that you may do in a hyper situation like that. Try to have a control over the situation and ask them to keep patience and wait until the police arrive.
  5. Do not try to punish the offender yourself: It is possible that the accident took place because of the mistake of the driver at the other end. You need not do anything once you have noted down his car number and his other important details.

What to do when accidents take place

No matter how major or minor the accident is, there are certain ways to manage with it properly. Most of the accident cases are not properly done with because one does not know what to do and how to control the situation. Given below is a list that will guide you appropriately:
  • First, try to make sure nobody is hurt and if anybody, inside the car or outside is badly hurt, try to call the ambulance.
  • It someone sustained minor hurts or bruises take out the first aid tools and help him/her. If you cannot do it yourself you will find many people would come out to lend a helping hand in such a situation.
  • Call the police without any delay. Even if the accident is a minor one and no one injured make sure to call the police in such a situation.
  • Get out of the car only after making sure that it is safe to move outside. Alternatively, you may move out from the other side or left side of the car.
  • If possible try to place or park your car at the side of the road so that the flow of traffic does not get disrupted.
  • If your car has collided with another vehicle, make sure to ask his name, address and contact number and make sure to give your personal details correctly.
  • If possible, use your mobile to take snapshots of the car damages met with the accident. These may help while setting the cores with your insurance companies.
  • Seek the help of the witnesses available and ask them to comply with you until the police arrive. If they are in a hurry, ask them for their contact and information.
  • When the police man comes tell him exactly what happened that is, how the accident took place, the number of people who sustained injuries, etc.
  • Finally, make sure to file a claim with your insurance company to compensate or recover the losses.
