Bangriposi in Orissa: A weekend with the daughter of Hills

Bangriposi in the Thakurani hills of Orissa reminds of hand drawn picture scenery with river, waterfalls, hills, forests and vast area of open fields. In the Oriya language, Bangriposi means daughter of the hills. Mostly populated by the tribal population, this region guarantees a serene, calm and peaceful atmosphere to relax for a couple of days in the week. Varied species of green growth surround the region on all its sides. Besides, the apex of hills appears as big walls giving a significant boundary to the place. It’s like a dreamland taking pride of its tribal population which mostly consists of the Santhals, Veels, Mundas, Lodhas, etc.

Nature has its own beauty to display and its own story to replicate here for everyone. The green surrounding, the cool breeze, the water bodies, together with the birds and animals make this place the only one of its kind. Image, watching the Buribalam River flowing through the centre of the region and the chirping of the birds trying to draw your attention, every now and then. Imagine, once more, experiencing the simple lifestyle of the tribal people, the fragrance of the mahua flower coming along the surrounding breeze or the exciting beating of the mridul and drums.

Once you reach here make sure to visit the Thakurani Hill and the Bangriposi Temple. Thakurani Hill locates two kilometres away while the Bangriposi Temple or the Bono Durga Temple locates four kilometres away only at the top of the hill. The goddess sits on the top of an elephant and anyone passing from here seeks the blessing of the goddess. Besides, Bangriposi is also popular for Dwarsena Mata temple and Neel Madhav temple.

The ancient Shimleshwari Shiv Mandir is located near the bus stand, three kilometres away at the top of a hill. Located eight kilometres away from here is the Bishnoi village. This village is famous for its Saturday market. Besides, located twenty Kilometres away from here is the Kuliana village famous for the Docra artworks. The village market is quite popular here among the locals.

Provided you have time to spare, stretch your journey to Kanchinda, located thirteen kilometres away. Here, the natural beauty of the place would grip you from all the corners. Thick growth of the sal, segun, muhua, palash, etc., would keep you spell-bound for long. Explore five kilometres more and you would reach Kala Dam, the stream of the Buribalam river. Moreover, the Bankabal Lake and barrage locates twenty-five kilometres away from here.

To get there

You may reach Bangriposi by the bus or the railways. It lies 295 kilometres away from the metropolitan city of Kolkata. Private buses available for Baripada from the Dharmatala bus stand. The Deluxe AC and non-AC bus fares are RS 150 and RS 110 respectively. Trekkers are available from Baripada to Bangriposi.

Trains are available from the Howrah Station to Balasore. You need to board another train or a bus from here to reach Bangriposi via Baripada. The distance between Balasore, and Bangriposi is ninety-five kilometres.

Lodging

Khairi Resort and Hotel Bangriposi available for suitable accommodation. Rent for the double bedroom in Khairi Resort is RS 800 and for AC deluxe room is RS 1200. Rent for the double bedroom in Hotel Bangriposi is RS 600 and four bedrooms is RS 800.
