Producer and director Anurag Kashyap’s latest film Bombay Velvet based on 2010 novel Mumbai Fables written by Gyan Prakash, a historian of modern India. The author grew up in Delhi and currently a History professor at Princeton University in New Jersey. His area of research includes urban modernity and colonial genealogies of modernity. His book mentions Mumbai in the fifties and sixties, its culture, etc. Besides, it also includes mention of the Marathi writer Govind Narayan Mudgalkar, Parsi writer Sir Dinshaw Wacha, British commander S M Edwards, etc.
Moreover, the book also draws attention the way the geographical area of Mumbai lured the people over the ages. The city attracted the people from different nooks and corners over the time and gone through the pressure of industrialists. One would also find the mention of the 2006 scary flood, the attacks of the intruders, Surat plague at the beginning of the nineties, and so on.

Story and plot
In the sixties, the media was gripped by the news that Navy commander Nanabati tried to kill his wife’s lover Silvia. It’s this subject taken from the book influenced the director to consider as the main subject for his film. Actor Ranbir Kapoor is playing the character of a boxer or a street fighter as Johny Balraj. Actress Anushka Sharma is playing the character of a jazz singer as Rosie Noronha. Moreover, Karan Johar is acting for the first time in a Bollywood movie. He is playing the important role of a media person as Khaizad Khambata. He tries to use Jhony Balraj to his advantage in the movie.

The make-up and styling is done keeping in mind the trend as those exist in the sixties. This is the first time actor Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma working as a pair in the movie. Karan Johar is making his debut as an actor and playing an important role in the movie. Besides, Ravina Tandon is appearing in a cameo of a role.
