The Zoological Garden Alipore, also known as the Kolkata Alipore Zoo, is the oldest zoo in the country, India. Spreading over an area of more than 46 acres of land it has formally opened in the year 1876 for the visitors. Ever-since, it has become the biggest tourist attraction in the metropolitan city of Kolkata in the West Bengal State. Attractions and activities
Indeed the Zoological Garden Alipore is a world in itself; a world of wild animals, reptiles and birds. Birds like the sparrows, pigeons, cuckoos, etc., of different kinds, colors and breed is a treat to watch. Moreover, their sweet and beautiful notes pleases every ear. During the winter, different types of migratory birds add a colorful dimension to the garden. Besides, the ducks and cranes swimming in the water add a picturesque view.

Apart from the attractive view of wild animals, reptiles and birds the zoo has some beautifully decorated parks and memoirs inside for the visitors. The green grasses, colorful flowers, pools of water, innumerable benches and chairs to relax make it an ideal place for the visitors. Besides, the zoo has good supply of drinking water and rest rooms at various points of the garden. Moreover, foods and snacks available inside the park in the various stalls.
The zoo authority giving due importance to provide the animals and reptiles with a natural surrounding. Although much has been done with success, but the continuous effort going on in this regard. For instance, the crocodiles and alligators now moved into an open wide surrounding. Earlier these housed in the Reptile House of the zoo.
Two female elephants, Rani and Titli, lives in a huge park inside the garden. They draw huge crowd and people including small children love to watch their activities in the vast open protected zone. The group of giraffes lazing in the huge park either nibbling leaves from the branches of trees or moving closer to the crowd to accept some tit-bits is another big attraction of the garden.
Now while talking about attracting and crowd pulling animals, the Royal Bengal Tiger deserves a special mention as well. People wait eagerly to have a glimpse and finally when it comes out in the open, it earns huge cheers and claps from the crowd. Besides, the White Tiger stands in the same league of favorites as well. It has its own history about the way it got first spotted in India by a king and ever since the population rose in numbers. It leaves in a vast protected area in the zoo and pulls uncountable crowds ever day.
The rhinos and hippos with a heavy and strong body is always a source of fair attraction. Some other attractions are the chimpanzees, monkeys, peacocks, ostrich, deer, snakes, owls, etc. It takes a few hours to explore the different attractions of the Zoological Garden.

Entry fee and timing
The zoo remains open from 9am to 5pm every day except Thursday. The entry fee is RS 20 per person. However, make sure not to carry any plastic items or food inside the park.

The Calcutta Zoo Aquarium, Alipore
The Calcutta Zoo Aquarium, another segment of the zoo, lies opposite of the Zoological Garden Alipore. Formally, opened in 1977 it has several fish aquariums of various sizes. Here, fishes of different shapes and sizes decorates the aquariums. It opens for the visitors from 10:30 am to 5pm every day. The entry fee is RS 5 per person.
To reach there
Visitors coming from the Howrah Station and Sealdah Station have a number of options to reach the destination. Buses like the bus number 230 available from the Sealdah Station to reach the spot. Mini buses like the Howrah Behala Mini bus available from the Howrah Station to reach the zoo. Alternatively, visitors may hire a taxi/cab to reach the Alipore Zoo.
