Milk is a popular healthy drink for all the ages. With time, scientific discoveries going on to derive more utilities from the drink. For instance, researches going on to find out extract more milk from cattle and how to process and keep it fresh for long. The branch of science that deals with this field is called the dairy technology.




By the term dairy technology we mean the complete work process starting from processing, packaging, storage and transportation to delivering. The salient features of engineering amalgamate with the knowledge of life science, bacteriology, biotechnology, dieting, etc., to reduce wastage, increasing benefits and thus increasing the lifespan. Here, comes the need or service of a dairy technologist. He carries out the operation of plants and keeps eye on the quality of production. Besides, he keeps track of different records including composition of products and on the creation of bi-products.

However, two types of works/jobs comes under it – One, to create designs of equipment/plants and two, to carry on and continue with projects. Besides, an experienced dairy technician may open his own institute. Moreover, to survive in this age of tough competition, people come to his for guidance and suggestion.

India has been in the usage of milk for sometime now. However, from the business points of view the Operation Flood project in 1990 gave it a new dimension. Besides, researches going on to discover new milk products apart from milk, curd, yogurt, etc. The dairy industry moving ahead with the mission to satisfy the taste bud of the new generation with new milk products.

The Indian dairy industry has not only a golden past, but also has a golden future. Hence, it would provide a lot of career and job options in the coming years. Even from the business points of view it has got to offer a lot of opportunities. Any plan to invest/business in the dairy products would prove to be a right decision because it has got a good profit margin. For instance, in the sweetmeat confectionery business, one has to spend only 40 to 45 percent in the raw materials.

Qualification Criteria for the Dairy Technology course

Candidates seeking admission in the training for the course need 60 percent marks in physics, chemistry and mathematics or 60 percent marks in the vocational stream of electrical service and maintenance. Age should be within the age range of 17 to 21 years. However, this criteria varies among institutes offering the course in the different states of India.
