Babul Supriyo belongs to a middle class family in the suburbs of Kolkata. Once he left his family, well-settled life and job for Mumbai. You may have come across people who went to Mumbai, heard about their struggle and sometimes even read about their failure which forced them to come back and give up their dreams forever. However, Babul Supriyo had other ideas. He went there, conquered and framed his name with the other top singers of his genre. You may quaver to know how was it possible? The answer is simple – He had dreams in his eyes and a heart with strong determination that made him the successful celebrity as he is today.



Biography: His early life, education, job and achievements

Born in Kolkata on 15th of December, 1970. He belongs to a reputable family where music holds great respect and regard. His more than 350 years old house is in Bandel, at the bank of the river Hooghly, popular for organizing the annual family Durga Puja event. His grandfather, Banikantha Nirmal Chandra Baral was a famous Brahmo music composer who trained him from his early childhood days. Besides, he had the regular practice sessions of Bengali modern songs with his father and uncle. He continued with the hobby of singing together with all the other activities and sports like swimming and long jump. After schooling from the Don Bosco School, he joined the Srirampur college followed by the City College in Kolkata.

His love for music

From the childhood, he has an acute attachment and love for songs. He had a great self belief that given an opportunity he could sing better than the others in the industry. He used to sing in college social functions, inter college fetes, etc. Besides, he won more than three dozen of awards by participating in inter-college competitions only. He got a lot of encouragement and inspiration wherever he sang. He began to think not to subdue his talent by doing regular ten to five jobs. Instead, he dreamed of making music his full-time profession.

Job and disappointment

To fulfill the wish of his father, he sat on the Banking exam and secured a job in the Standard Chartered Bank as a cashier-cum-clerk only at the age of 20 years. Nothing could have given him more satisfaction in life than becoming a playback singer and he went to Mumbai. Success seemed far away from him, and he had to return empty-handed back to Kolkata. He got disheartened and demoralized by this turn of event in his life but he never ever gave up.

Back in the spotlight

Once again, he came back to Mumbai and got his golden breakthrough Kalyanji who took him abroad for live concerts. In the year 1993, he participated in a live show called, “Jumma Chumma in London” along with Amitabh Bachchan and other superstars. When the great Bollywood actor launched his album, “Sochta Hun,” his joy knew no bounds. He came into the limelight as more composers came to know him. Soon, he worked with composer Nadeem-Shravan in many films. One film that made him a superstar overnight was Rajesh Roshan's “Kaho na pyaar hai” where he has sung the title song.

Life as a celebrity

Though his songs have hit many award-winning ceremonies, he also features in regular television shows. He is a playback singer with tremendous talent. Though playback singing is his first love but he does not want to limit himself to it alone as he often acts in films. The audience appreciated his acting in some well-known movies as a hero as well as in a negative role. In the midst of other great singers like Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam, etc., he had to make his presence felt. The job was tough for him but not an impossible one since he made his own destiny and identity with his strong determination and positive approach.
