Travel Guide to Shankarpur Sea Beach in East Midnapore

Once the casuarina groves on the golden beach of Shankarpur were the prime attraction of the place. Unfortunately, with time a major part of this engulfed by the sea waters. Though, a major set back but still the place has dense camouflage of the casuarina and the eucalyptus trees to capture the heart of the visitors. Moreover, the Shankarpur fishing harbor, the busy trolleys moving to and fro, hustle and bustle of the fishers and the sight of the trolleys loaded with fishes getting unloaded by the fishers catches one's attention. All this adds up to the experience being in the sphere of nature near the seaside. Though the place remains idle on most of the days of the week but during the weekends it attracts crowds not only from the nearby regions of the state West Bengal but from every corner of India. A perfect place for those who wants to spend a couple of days in a peaceful and calm atmosphere.




How to get there?

Since it locates aboard the Digha and Contai roadway, it connects well with other major weekend tourist places like Digha, Mandarmani and Junput. The nearest airport, Dum Dum, (Netaji Subhash airport) 190 Kilometers from the place. Situated in the East Midnapore district, it is only 185 Kilometers from Kolkata. Regular buses leave for Digha from the Dharmatala (Shahid Minar) and the Howrah station of Kolkata. It would take four to five hours to get there. One have to get down at Ramnagar and hire a rickshaw to the sea beach. Alternatively, one may board a bus from Chhodo-mile bus stand to get there.

Regular trains are available from the Howrah Station and the Shalimar Station. Trains leave the Howrah station in the morning and in the afternoon. One may board the Tamralipta express in the morning or the Kandari express in the afternoon to get down at Digha. From here, one have to cover eight Kilometers of distance to Ramnagar stop. Van rickshaws are available for the Shankarpur. Besides, every Saturday morning Pahadi express runs to the place from the Howrah Station.

Accommodation

Plenty of shelters available for lodging and one need to book one that suits one's budget. To give a fair idea, the approximate rent charges of some of the hotels are given below:
  1. For a non A.C double bedroom, the hotel Nest charges RS 1500. A.C bedrooms are available for RS 4000 to RS 5000.
  2. Hotel Sandy Bay charges RS 1000 to RS 1500 for A.C bedroom
  3. Hotel Ashoka charges RS 600 to RS 800 for non A.C bedrooms and RS 1200 for A.C bedrooms.

Attractions

The view of the early morning sunrise and the sunset at the dusk lures the visitors from far and wide come to have a glimpse at the place. The dense grove of the casuarina and the eucalyptus trees sooth the eyes. Besides, the gentle sound of the leaves moving in breeze at the groves create a musical atmosphere. The trolleys of fish getting unloaded by the fishers provides an opportunity to view countless fish of different shapes and sizes. While one could be familiar with most of these fish but some of these surprises. Besides, one may come across crabs crawling on the sandy beaches early in the morning. Moreover, one may get the opportunity to view the birds like kingfisher, plovers, tern, sandpiper, etc. Since, this place lies close to the Digha beach, one may make sure to visit this famous sea beach while travelling to this place. Though these are similar sea beaches in the region, but Shankarpur befits far away from the huffy crowd and peaceful while Digha, being more popular remains crowded with tourists and in the midst of all the hustle and bustle.

Best time to travel and language: The best time to travel is from the months of October to march. Since, the temperature during summer and winter ranges from 26 degree Celsius to 38 degree Celsius and from 9 degree Celsius to 19 degree Celsius, travelling in these months add to the comfort. Besides, most people speak here fluent Bengali and Hindi language.
