Professor Amartya Sen is one of the great sons of India, and we are proud of him. He is a great talent and genius who has earned name, fame and honor for our country through his rigorous hard work and contribution. We as Indians, are proud of him and would always be for his parallel contributions. In 1998, he won the Nobel prize award for his benevolent contribution in the subject of Economics. That moment was remarkable for us because it was the first time in the history when an asian won the award after the independence. Though, it is important to mention here that Rabindranath Tagore won the Noble prize for Gitanjali in Literature in the year, 1913.
Biography
In 1933, Amartya Sen was born at Santiniketan in West Bengal. He did his schooling and brought up here. His father was Ashutosh Sen, a Chemistry professor in the Dacca University and his mother was Amita Sen was a scholar and vice-chancellor of the Vishva Bharati University. Our beloved poet, Tagore gave him the name Amartya.
After completing his schooling in Santiniketan, he went to Presidency College, in Kolkata, for higher education. He graduated in the year 1953 from this university with Economic honors. Besides, he stood first class first in the Bachelors of Art (honours) examination. Next, he went to England at the Trinity College, Cambridge to pursue further extensive education. After getting the Masters of Art degree, from this educational center, he returned to India. He started his career here, in India, as a professor of Economics in the Jadavpur University and Delhi University. To pursue and complete his Ph.D in his subject of interest he joined the Trinity College. He was also the professor of Economics in the Cambridge and Harvard Universities. He carried out research in his beloved subject of Economics and publicized his own essays for the people. Besides, he was also a great author and wrote several books on the burning issues of the then times like famines, poverty, etc. He had also been to several other countries like England, America, etc.
Research
He carried out great research in the subject of Economics for many years. His enormous contributions through his books appreciated both in home and abroad. He is popular for his subject and for his benevolent contribution globally. Some of his well-known works are Choice of Techniques, Poverty and Famines, Collective Choice and Social Welfare, The Economic Development and Social opportunities, etc. He was greatly moved by the then famines in countries like Sahara, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and China. The famine of Bengal in 1943 touched his heart when he was a small boy and later, he could not stop pointing out that it was more like a man-made famine. He stressed on his view that such famines occur due to unequal distribution of food and because of increasing food prices. There is no whit of doubt that this extraordinary personality from West Bengal, India has given his heart and soul to contributions in Economic Science. He received big words of appreciation from the great personalities for his works, thesis and researches.
Accolades
Besides, receiving the Nobel Prize, he also earned Doctorate of Literature and Doctorate of Science degrees through different universities. In 1976, he received the Mahalanabish prize and in 1994, the Indira Gandhi Gold Medal. In 1998, he received the Nobel Memorial Prize for his remarkable contribution in Economic Sciences. Moreover, in 1999, he bagged the most prestigious Bharat Ratna and in 2012, the National Humanities Medal.
He is an extraordinary personality who bears utmost understanding, intelligence and mastermind behind his works. With time his genius got more polished in countries like England and America. His books and literary works have translated into different languages. We hope that in future more such great personalities born in our country.
