Badu is a locality at Madhyamgram in the North 24 Parganas district. To be precise, Madhyamgram is located in the neighbourhoods of the metropolitan city Kolkata. The Calcutta Snake Park was opened way back in 1977 with the goal of awakening awareness among the people towards animals and their importance in human life. With the passage of time it turned out to be one of the most happening spots nearby Kolkata both for the animals/nature lovers and general visitors after the Alipore Zoological Garden. However, not for a moment we are trying to compare this park with the Alipore Zoo in Kolkata. The Alipore Zoo has its own flair, variety and versatility for it is more like a heritage of the Kolkata City and we love it. Talking about the Snake Park it has gone through many ups and downs with the passage of time. With no undue exaggeration, the park has successfully been able to sustain all the highs or lows and is open for all its visitors today.

It spreads over an area of more than two acres and houses variety of birds, animals and reptiles includinhe snakes are kept in small glass houses while some animals and reptiles are in the open shades. It treasures some of the rare variety of snakes like Monocled Cobra, Banded Krait (Sankha Muti), Checkered Keel Backed, Sand Boa (Tutur), Rock Python (Moyal), etc. Besides, it also houses the Pond Turtle (Pukur Kachim) and the Red Eared Slider Turtle (Lal Kan Kachim). Furthermore, the giant Emu bird is also the centre of attraction of the park. Apart from preserving these rare species of reptiles, lizards, animals and birds the authorities do carry out rescue works for animals. The park is also known as the Zoological Garden Conservation Centre and Laboratory. Indeed, it’s worthwhile to visit the spot along with friends and family for a day’s trip.

Madhyamgram is well connected with Kolkata by the bus and local train services. Calcutta Snake Park is located at Badu in the Sealdah Bongaon rail route around five kilometres away from the Madhyamgram Station. It takes around 35 to 40 minutes to cover a distance of 18 kilometres from the Sealdah Station to Madhyamgram Station. Local trains like the Bongaon local, Habra local, Hasnabad local, Duttapukur local, Madhyamgram local, Barasat local, Basirhat local and Gobardanga local available from the Sealdah Main Station for the Madhyamgram Station. After exiting the train at the Madhyamgram Station, you need to walk for five minutes to reach Madyamgram Chowrasta. From here, you need to cover another five kilometres in an auto rickshaw to reach the Calcutta Snake Park at Badu.

However, the spot is also accessible by the bus routes from various places of Kolkata. Public buses like AC 10, L238 are available from Howrah Station, public bus number 93 is available from Bagbazar and public bus number 79D is available from Babughat for Madhyamgram Chowrasta.
